Meet author Alison Morton

Even before she pulled on her first set of combats, Alison Morton was fascinated by the idea of women soldiers. Brought up by a feminist mother and an ex-military father, it never occurred to her that women couldn’t serve their country in the armed forces. Everybody in her family had done time in uniform and in theatre all over the globe.

So busy in her day job, Alison joined the Territorial Army in a special communications regiment and left six years later as a captain, having done all sorts of interesting and exciting things all over the NATO area that no civilian would ever know or see. Or that she can talk about, even now…

But something else fuels her writing…
A ‘Roman nut’ since age 11, Alison misspent decades clambering over Roman sites throughout Europe. Fascinated by the breathtaking mosaics at Ampurias in Spain and the engineering brilliance of the Pont du Gard in France, she was curious about the role of women in the complex, powerful and value-driven Roman civilisation. That started her wondering what a modern Roman society would be like if run by strong women. She heaps trouble on her heroines – conspiracy, revolution and heartache but gives them all a sharp line in dialogue.

Alison’s reading
Her favourite fiction genres are mainly historical, crime and thriller fiction, especially spy stories, and speculative fiction, but her ‘comfort reads’ – something she tries to keep a secret – are without doubt Georgette Heyer’s Regency novels (Favourites: These Old Shades and Arabella). What Alison read in 2023.

Now, she lives in France with her husband and writes Roman-themed alternate history thrillers with tough heroines and has begun a new series with a Franco-British ex-special forces heroine.
